Tomatoes are coming into season now we’re entering the warmer months, so how do store them to make sure they stay fresh and perfect to consume?

You keep them in the fridge.

False! Tomatoes are best kept out of the fridge and at room temperature. No one likes mealy/fluffy toms, so keep them fresh, juicy, and ready to eat by storing them on your bench or in a cool place in your kitchen. They are delicate wee fruits, so try not to stack them on top of one another, instead lay them flat. They’ll thank you for it and so will your taste buds when it comes time to eat them!

There are only a few different varieties of tomatoes.

False! There are over 10,000 different types of tasty tomatoes, spanning the colours of the rainbow (almost), so get ready see and taste different types of tomatoes that have varying tastes and sizes.

Tomatoes are best stored with their stems down.

True! They will keep longer if you keep them upside down rather than right side up. The more you know!

Tomatoes are made up of almost 95% water.

True! Toms consist of approximately 94.5% water. So keeping them out of your fridge and on your bench at room temperature stops all this watery deliciousness from drying out and becoming fluffy. But not to worry, their high water content doesn't mean they aren't packed with vitamins and nutritional goodness. They are full of antioxidants and vitamin C to name a few.
