Cooking with The Chiefs

We're proud as punch to be part of The Chiefs Family, feeding the lads with our nutritious (and delicious) recipes and fresh ingredients. I love travelling to the Waikato for some hands on time in the kitchen with the boys. They're as talented in the kitchen as they are on the field!

Here's one of the recipes we cooked together at this week's class. A yummy, warming crumble - perfect for a cold winters night! 

Apple and Blackberry Crumble

 Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: 30-40 minutes


 Stewed fruit

1.5 kg apples, peeled and roughly chopped

1 cup fresh or frozen blackberries

zest and juice of ½ orange

2-3 tablespoons liquid honey


Crumble topping

½ cup brown sugar

1 cup fine rolled oats

¾ cup ground almonds

75g butter, diced

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking powder

Pinch of salt

Yoghurt, cream or ice-cream, to serve



 Preheat oven to 180 °C.

  1. Place apples, blackberries, orange juice and zest in a pot. Simmer, uncovered, stirring frequently, until apples are soft – this will take about 15 minutes. Sweeten to taste with honey.
  1. Spoon stewed fruit into a medium-sized baking dish.
  1. Combine brown sugar, rolled oats, ground almonds, butter, cinnamon powder, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Rub the butter into the mixture with your finger tips, until it resembles breadcrumbs. Spoon crumble topping over the fruit mixture.
  1. Bake until the topping is golden and crunchy, about 30 minutes.

 Serve with yoghurt, cream or ice cream.
