Veggies to the rescue

We eat them on a regular basis, but did you know what some fruit and veggies have great cleaning properties, too?

Onions
Heat your BBQ grill to high. Cut some peeled white onions in half and use tongs or a BBQ fork to rub it across the grates to remove grit and grime.

Potatoes
Slice up an old potato into thick pieces that are easy to hold onto. Place your grill grates on a flat surface and spread vegetable oil and plenty of coarse salt over them. Scrub the grates with the potato pieces to remove all the burnt gunk and rust.

Vinegar for the win

Grab some lukewarm water, white vinegar and a sheet of aluminium foil. Mix two cups of vinegar and two cups of water and pour the solution on the racks of the grill. Leave for 10 minutes.

When the grill has dried, fold the foil into a small square (about 5cm) and, using extra vinegar, scrub the grill’s interior with the foil. You won’t need to rinse anything. You can also use this method to clean the exterior.

Brilliant baking soda

Is there anything that baking soda can’t clean? Sprinkle some baking soda onto the hot plate and use a damp brush to scrub until it’s clean. If you’re cleaning the grates, dip a damp brush into baking soda and scrub away.

Salt ‘n’ lemon

Heat the grill to high. Cut some lemons in half and dip the exposed ends into salt. Rub the grates with the salty lemons and the combo of acidity and abrasiveness will work its magic.
