Kiwi Classic Mince & Cheese Pie

What better way to back Black than with a Kiwi classic mince and cheese pie! This yummy recipe is great for a family meal and the ultimate iconic Kiwi dish. Let’s be honest, Kiwis just do them better! Make the filling in advance, then simply pop in the oven to cook so you can have a tasty treat before kick-off. The family will be scrumming around the table with this dish!

Serves: 4–5 

 

Mince and Cheese Pie 

1 brown onion  

1 carrot 

1 clove minced garlic 

1 tsp garlic powder 

½ tsp onion powder 

½ tsp dried oregano 

½ tsp paprika 

½ tsp celery salt 

500g beef mince  

1 cup beef stock 

Tbsp cornflour  

Tbsp water 

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 

2 tsp tomato sauce 

2 cups grated cheese (Edam or Tasty) 

1 egg  

250g puff pastry  

 

  1. Preheat oven to 200oC. Seat aside a medium baking dish (measuring about 20 x 28cm) Finely dice onion and grate carrot. 

  1. Heat a drizzle of oil in a large fry-pan on medium-high heat. Cook onion and carrot for about 3 minutes, until softened.  

  1. Add garlic and spices and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant. Add beef and cook for about 4 minutes, breaking up as it cooks, until browned.   

  1. Add first measure of stock and bring up to a simmer. Mix cornflour with water and add to beef along with Worcestershire and tomato sauce and simmer for about 1 minute, until thickened. Stir through second measure of stock, and season.  

  1. Transfer beef mixture into reserved dish and sprinkle over cheese. In a small bowl, whisk egg. 

  1. Unroll pastry and place on top to fit snugly, cut pastry to fit the dish, if needed. Prick pastry in a few places with a fork, then lightly brush with egg. Bake for 20-25 minutes until pastry is golden.
