Souptastic Wednesday

Today Mike, Danielle and Kay, from our Test Kitchen, were invited to visit ‘The Garden’s Primary School’ in Manurewa to participate in their soup making initiative called “Souptastic”.

An amazing bunch of energetic, passionate and very hardworking Year 7 and 8 students lead by their teacher, Tanya Griffin (a My Food Bag fan and fellow foodie). This bunch of 28 students sacrifice their lunch break every week to make fresh soup for the wider school.

Tanya’s pumpkin soup is the most requested and popular soup. However today they decided to make our favourite soup recipes. One was Polly Brodie’s (Senior Recipe Developer) Creamy Vegetable and Chicken Soup, the other Kay Glendining’s (Test Cook) Nonna’s Minestrone Soup.

The school had previously placed their orders, the quantity of ingredients needed was calculated, and the ingredients sourced.

The kids were most excited when we arrived to help them in their school kitchen, they were already hard at work chopping and prepping. We honestly felt like celebrities from the excitement and very warm welcome we received! Imagine the reception if Nadia had been with us!!!

These kids and their teacher were the true stars. We felt very humbled by their passion to provide healthy and nutritious food to the school. I loved that they grow some of their own vegetables used in their cooking. It really is ‘food made with love’.

The kids were eager to ask lots of questions about our business and learn new skills to help them in the kitchen, cutting, prepping, cooking and tasting tasting and more tasting! We loved hearing about what they eat at home for dinner and how “Mum burnt the Minestrone soup” at their house.

Thank you so much Tanya and the ‘Souptastic’ team for allowing us to cook with you in your kitchen.

We hope you all enjoyed our recipes.
