The berries, the cherries, the nectarines and the peaches all have long summer evenings and the beach written all over them. Not only are they delicious, refreshing and juicy, they also have many benefits!
Did you know that strawberries are the only fruit to have their seeds on the outside? Kinda cool huh? Because of this they technically aren’t part of the berry family but they do have some of the same functional properties! Like blueberries, strawberries are rich in antioxidants. This is good for preventing disease and keeping away nasty colds that you don’t want plaguing you while the suns out to play!
Nectarines, on the other hand, have large amounts of dietary fibre which is good for your digestion. They come from the same family as roses which explain their yummy smell and sweet taste. Other stone fruit like apricots and plums will also be making their way to your fruit boxes and providing the perfect source of Vitamin C as well as being a guilt-free topping to a summer tart or even stewed to pour on top of your ice cream – yum!
If you haven’t already tried it before, putting small fruits like blueberries, grapes or even chopped up banana in the freezer can provide you with an alternative to a popsicle for a hot afternoon. The bonus is that this is better for you and the little ones will love it too!
If you weren’t already, hopefully you are now just as eager as we are for Summer and remember to chuck one of nature’s treats in with your togs and towel next time you head out to soak up some of that beautiful Vitamin D.
